How do I know if my Double Glazing needs replacing?

Table of Contents

Replacing double-glazed windows is not something that needs to happen regularly as they have the ability to last up to 20 years if maintained correctly. Many other factors will have an effect on the longevity of your double-glazed windows such as the installation process, weather conditions, the window frame and the material of the glass.

To keep your heating bills reduced it’s important to make sure that your windows are working just as efficiently as when you originally had them installed. Old and damaged windows will struggle to retain the heat within your home as well as make your property safe and soundproof.

If you are curious as to whether your windows need to be replaced then there are many different signs to look out for which we are going to explain.

1. Condensation Between Window Panes

The first sign you will want to look for is whether you can see visible condensation between the panes of your double-glazing windows. Once the temperature of your glass windows has fallen below its dew point the water vapour will condense into the water on the surface of your windows.

An increased amount of condensation will cause the rooms of your property to become cold and muggy meaning the window panes have developed a leak. If you do notice condensation between the panes of your windows then you will want to consider a double-glazing window replacement as soon as possible.

2. Noticeable Draughts

This is one of the most noticeable signs that will appear once your double-glazing windows need replacing. You may notice an increase in your energy bills, your home struggling to retain heat and becoming significantly colder. Draughts coming from your double-glazing windows is a sign that the seals have failed, yet draughts appearing from the gap in your building’s brickwork can also suggest the window sealants are starting to fail.

If this is the case, then your windows may just require the seals to be replaced instead of a whole window replacement. Compared to a window seal repair, replacing double-glazing windows costs significantly more, so it’s worth discussing with your window installer the options before undergoing any major work.

3. Chips or Cracks

A chip or crack within the panes of your windows or on the exterior is one of the most obvious signs that your property requires a double-glazing window replacement. Having your double-glazing windows replaced will avoid water leaks and an increase in energy bills due to draughts.

4. Water Leaks

Double-glazed windows are designed to protect your property from the weather conditions outside, so if you notice water leaks in or around your windows then they aren’t working effectively. Water leaks within your double-glazing windows can be a sign that the seal of your window frames has worn away, yet if it’s not the seal that’s causing water leakage then it can be a blockage in the drainage of your windows.

5. Increased Noise

If you find that there is too much noise coming from the outside of your property to the inside of your property then it can be a reason to consider a double-glazing window replacement. Double-glazing windows are designed to reduce the amount of sound that’s transferred into the property due to their enhanced insulation.

If you are experiencing the same level of noise from the outside when your windows are closed as they are when they are open then it’s a clear indicator that your windows are coming to the end of their life and need to be replaced.

6. Increased Energy Bills

Energy bills

If you find that your energy bills have increased significantly over time then it could be due to the energy efficiency of your windows. If your double-glazing windows aren’t performing effectively by retaining the heat within your home then you will find yourself relying on a central heating system more frequently which will have a huge impact on your energy bills.

Due to the current energy crisis, it is now more important than ever to ensure your double-glazing windows are working up to their usual standard. To help keep energy bills at an all-time low, we at BJH would recommend regularly checking that your double-glazed windows are working just as efficiently as they were when you originally had them installed.

7. Difficulty Opening and Closing windows

One clear sign that your double-glazed windows may need replacing is if you experience difficulty in opening or closing them. This issue can arise from several underlying problems that compromise the functionality and efficiency of your windows, such as the swelling of the window frame, misalignment of mechanisms or a build up of dirt / debris that’s inaccessible.

If your windows are requiring a significant amount of force to open and close, it’s definitely worth having them replaced, to avoid damage to the window or even yourself.

So how often does Double Glazing need replacing?

If you aren’t experiencing general wear and tear, condensation, an increase in energy bills, draughts, increased noise or chips within your double-glazed windows then we would recommend considering a double-glazing window replacement every 20 years. Replacing your double-glazing windows ensures they perform up to their usual standard without affecting your energy bills and the security of your property.

Alternatively, if you have recently had your double-glazing windows replaced and are wanting to guarantee their longevity then there are many steps that you can take to make sure they work up to scratch and look as good as new.
